Work and Travel Field Report (October 2014)

One of our students, who is doing Work and Travel, took the time to tell us about his stay in Japan, what he has been doing so far and his future plans:

“I came to Japan in October 2014. At first, I didn’t speak almost any Japanese though I did a language course for a week to learn the basics for my travels. My first job was at a Christmas Market at the Hakata Station in Fukuoka. We had a good time grilling sausages, selling hot wine and talking to the visitors.
The best thing about the job was however that the owner contacted me again later and offered me another work.

After we finished work at the Christmas Market at the end of December, I traveled around Kyushu and Honshu with a couple of my friends for about three and half months. We went to Kyoto and Osaka always finding small jobs to cover our expenses like working at bars or helping at events selling food. The most fun job probably was in Chiran, a small town located in the Kagoshima Prefecture, where we helped at a local festival grilling chicken. The event was even broadcast in the Japanese television!

When I came back to Fukuoka in April, I met a really nice girl and we got together pretty soon thereafter.
I also got the chance to visit Okinawa. The landscape was just stunning. If I could, I’d like to live there.

One of my most memorable experiences happened during my first months in Japan.
I had booked a stay at a Japanese host family with my Work and Travel program but forgot to extend it at some point. I thought about what to do and decided spontaneously to walk from Aso, a town in the center of Kyushu, to Beppu, a city at the north-east coast of Kyushu. It was harder than I imagined though, which is why I took the bus about halfway through.

I am already planning my next tour with my friends. We want to do a cycling tour from Tokyo to Fukuoka, and I definitely plan on seeing this one through to the end!”
