Work and Travel Field Report (August 2014)

We did an interview with one of our students, who has come to Japan with a Working Holiday Visa.
We asked him about his stay and what he has done so far. This is his report:

“When I first came to Fukuoka in August 2014, I didn’t speak a lot of Japanese. I had booked a language course for three months to get ready for work but I soon realized that I had to learn more and extended my course for another month. During these four months, I found a lot of friends, Japanese as well as foreigners, and we did so many things together. For example, we went to community parties, did Karaoke and Purikura, and we also went on a couple of trips to other cities like Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Between November and December, I worked at the Christmas Market in Fukuoka, which was organized by a Japanese company. At the end of December, some friends and myself took a trip together to Honshu, Japan’s main island. We went from Tokyo to Kyoto and back to Tokyo. It was a lot of fun. After coming back, I found an own apartment and was really excited when I met my current girlfriend soon afterwards. Although I was able to practice my Japanese during the whole time, I felt the need to study more. That’s why I went back to school for another two months in February.

I’ve been working at a Takoyaki shop for some time now and I like it a lot. I also study Japanese by myself and I even tried out Kendo! At the moment, I am preparing for the JLPT N3 test in July. I really want to pass it since it would help me a lot in the future. The next big event I plan for is a trip to Tokyo with my friends. It’s not just a trip though because we will go back to Fukuoka by bicycle!

So far, I’ve really enjoyed my stay in Japan and I’m curious about what lies ahead.
If you want to experience Japan yourself, I can only recommend the Work and Travel program.
It’s totally worth it!”
