Beach day 

The golden week is the perfect time to relax and let the stress of every day life behind. On the third day of the week, the students decided to relax at the beach and enjoy the first sunrays of summer. Equipped with sun blocker, bags full of snacks and drinks, the students found themselves a nice and sunny place at the beach and prepared their towels. After a long and delicious beach picnic, some students decided to open the swimming season and dashed into the waves of momochi beach. Dontaku 2017 recap 

Last week was golden week and people all around Japan enjoyed the public holiday with their friends and family. The students of Asahi Nihongo decided to use their study-free time to join the annual Dontaku parade which serenades through the streets of Hakata on the 3rd of may. People dress up in unique costumes parade through the streets while clapping shamoji spoons and dance on stages and in squares in various quarters of the town. Dontaku festival 

There are festivals and events that are only held in Fukuoka and besides Yamakasa, the most popular one is the Dontaku festival. People dress up in unique costumes parade through the streets while clapping shamoji spoons and dance on stages and in squares in various quarters of the town. A shamoji, which is a wooden utensil for serving rice, evokes the image of a woman, busy preparing a meal, dashing out to join the parade passing in front of her house. Yakitori

Yakitori is a Japanese type of skewered chicken, which is considered one of the most tasty snacks that you can get at an Izakaya. Let’s take a closer look at how Yakitori is actually made: The preparation of Yakitori involves skewering the meat with a type of skewer typically that is often made of steel, bamboo, or similar materials. Calligraphy class 

Today, the students of the Asahi Nihongo school had the opportunity to take part in a calligraphy class. Calligraphy is an art that is deeply interwoven with Japanese history and culture. The perfect execution of drawing Japanese letters is much more than a writing exercise, it is meditation and relaxation for the artist. After a short introduction to the art, the students were shown the brushes and the paper, including an explanation of what they are made of. Welcome party 

A lot of new students arrived at the Asahi Nihongo School, reason enough to celebrate and get to know each other at our famous welcome parties. On the weekend, around 20 old and new pupils of the Asahi School went to a bar/ restaurant in the Tenjin area to get some drinks and snacks and have some relaxed chats. People who have not met each other before laughed and drank together, a lot of new friendships and connections were made while everybody enjoyed tasty Japanese snacks and dishes. At the end of night, everybody talked to everybody and the group of students got a lot closer to each other. This

Japanese sports 

This week, the Japanese study group learned about Japanese sports. After discussing which sport is most popular in Japan, which clearly is baseball, the group focused on sports that are Japanese inventions with deep roots in the country’s history.  After counting up several martial arts, the teacher led the students to the topic he wanted to talk about, as he prepared a grammar lesson playing with terms coming from that sport: Sumo.  After a short introduction to the sumo ranking system, the order in which the strength of the fighters is measured, the teacher explained how to express that something is bigger, smaller, stronger etc than something else in Japanese.

JLPT preparation course

Asahi Nihongo provides a JLPT Preparation Course for N1, N2 and N3 from May 8th, 2017. The course is for students who already have previous knowledge of the Japanese language. With only 2 to 6 students per class, you will study in a relaxed atmosphere. The test preparation textbook is easy to understand, and you will do lots of practice with test sheets, test questions and CD’s.

Hanami party recap 

Despite the changing weather and the fact that the cherry blossoms has not fully open yet, this years Asahi Nihongo Hanami party was a huge success. Around 60 people attended the event that was held at the Maizuru park on the 26th of march. Everybody was sitting on tatami mats in a huge circle, the middle was stashed with delicious food and snacks that the guests brought along. We played three games, including a Bingo in which our Japanese and international guests got to know each other better, a lemonade drinking competition and last but not least, a Janken tournament, which was highly exciting as everybody participated. Lolita Fashion Dinner 

This Saturday one of our students presented the Lolita fashion collection she has been working on for the last months in an Atelier in Daimyo. The student finished her internship at the fashion atelier, the show was her final graduation work. The head chef of the atelier prepared food and drinks for everybody who attended and watched the show, the buffet was huge and delicious so everybody ate a lot while looking forward to the collection. The dresses were beautifully executed in the Japanese Lolita style which reminds of French renaissance dresses. The male models wore t-shirts and tights, harmonising with the dresses of the collection as the same fabrics

Japanese slang 

In yesterday’s Japanese study group session, the students were introduced to Japanese slang words that are popular among teenagers and younger Japanese people. After a few example sentences, the students were able to use the words freely, creating their own example scenarios and situations which was a lot of fun for everybody as the students are normally used to very polite standard Japanese.  After finishing the slang word explanation, the students focused on Japanese grammar, the possibility and passiv form and the short forms which can also be used in certain situations. It was a fairly difficult lecture but all students were able to understand and use the new grammar

Shopping in Fukuoka 

The topic of today’s Japanese study group was shopping in Fukuoka. Everybody told the group what he or she purchased lately and the students discussed matters such as clothing, food and other things to buy and where in Fukuoka to get them.  After an explanation on how to express that something “looks like (adjective)”, the students were challenged to express how different examples looked like in Japanese, for example: “the ring looks expensive”.  After everybody got a hang of this expression, the students asked each other about what they want to buy the most in the very moment.  It was a fun and informative lesson, everybody learned a lot about

International parlor game event 

The students of Asahi Nihongo came up with a really good idea during today’s study rehearsal: in order to connect with other students of the school, including Japanese students who study foreign languages, the students would like to invite you to a parlor game event! The event will be held on Friday, the 31st of march at the Asahi Nihongo school. The goal of the event is to make new friendships and connections outside of your usual peer group.
