Haute Cuisine in a Box – Bentō

Bentō (弁当) is a single-portion meal common in Japanese everyday life. It often includes rice, fish or meat, and cooked vegetables in a small box so you can take it wherever you go. Bentō boxes come in all shapes and sizes, with literally thousands of different containers to choose from. Bentō are available in many places throughout Japan, including Konbinis and railway stations.

Traditionally, Japanese people spend a lot of time and energy on carefully preparing Bentō for their loved ones. Do-it-yourself mentality and passion are essential parts of the Bentō culture.

The difference between a normal lunch box and a Bentō is, besides the container, the craftsmanship that is often involved in making a colorful and creative Bentō: there are incredible complex designs and even competitions to the best-looking Bentō.

Did this make you hungry? Get yourself a Bentō or try to make one yourself. There are thousands of books and recipes on the web to choose from!
