During summer, there are a lot of festivals called Natsumatsuri (夏祭り) in Japan.
Usually, there are many small shops on the streets selling a lot of different foods and drinks. Takoyaki (Baked octopus), Yakitori (baked chicken), Yakisoba (baked noodle), Okonomiyaki (Japanese style pizza), Kakigori (Ice) are very popular for example. The streets are often crowded and you can see women and children wearing Yukata (the summer version of the Kimono). Children enjoy the matsuri especially because of the various activities such as catching gold fishes.
At night, there are usually fireworks and it is common practice to enjoy it together with friends or family.
Festivals are also featured by decorated floats called Dashi, which are accompanied by music and dancers. Every summer festival is different. It is a great opportunity to enjoy this time of the year.
