Today we are visiting another intern! We talked to Benedikt from Germany and asked him about his educational work at the school Team Gifted.
Why did you choose Asahi Nihongo?
I searched the internet for internships in Japan. The organisation, which helped me come to Japan, was a partner of Asahi Nihongo.
Why did you pick this internship?
I want to become a teacher in the future, and I have already done an internship at a German elementary school. But because I love Japan, I also wanted to experience life at a Japanese school. Team Gifted seemed to be a very good choice to achieve this.
What were your tasks?
My main task was to take care of our students. Of course, I also assisted the teachers during class and taught by myself. When there was trouble with a certain student, I had to take them outside the class room and look after them. Moreover, I was occasionally seated next to a student in class so I could help them concentrate better during the lesson. If the students had any difficulties with their English homework, we would sit together and discuss the question. In addition, I joined many outside activities such as growing vegetables on the school’s own field, swimming with the students or baking cookies with them.
Were there any (cultural) problems you had to overcome during your internship?
As the children often have difficulties to keep being concentrated in class, it was hard to understand their language at times. Some students tended to speak very fast or in a dialect, while others were very shy and mumbled a lot. But if you get to know them better, you get used to it.
What did you like the most about your internship?
I liked the familiar atmosphere the most. Because of the small number of students, I got acquainted with everyone very fast. Furthermore, I liked the ability to choose by myself what I wanted to teach the children.
And how do you like Fukuoka?
Fukuoka is a very nice place. Compared to Tokyo, it is not as crowded and much cleaner. Public transport is also convenient because all trains arrive on time. Moreover, you can see and feel traditional and modern Japanese culture everywhere.
Do you have any tips or recommendations for people who might want to do an internship?
Always be open-minded if you plan to do an internship. People are usually very friendly and willing to help you, so there is no reason to worry. In case you do an internship at a school, you have to keep your cool and be patient.
