Internship Program: Unpaid Internship
Company/Type: Rose Yoko
Nationality: German
This time we introduce a potential future fashion designer! Jennifer from Germany talks about her creative work at the studio “Rose Yoko”.
Why did you choose Asahi Nihongo?
The organisation I went to Japan with is a partner of Asahi Nihongo.
Why did you pick this internship?
I want to become a fashion designer in the future, and I have to do an internship related to fashion for my studies in Germany. Yoko is an artist and designer, so I thought doing an internship at her studio would be a good opportunity to get a better understanding of how a designer works.
What were your tasks?
At first, I had to create an Instagram as well as a Facebook account for our collaboration label “Amai&Rose”. I also had to maintain those profiles and update the pages. Moreover, I designed a logo for our label, which was later printed on a skirt I had been working on. There might be a whole Amai&Rose collection in the future.
Were there any (cultural) problems you had to overcome during your internship?
I didn’t have any problems with the language. Yoko used to speak a bit fast though, so it was a bit hard to follow her at times.
What did you like the most about your internship?
Yoko and I once inspected a big variety of different cloths. She explained a lot about the different types of cloth, and I was even allowed to use some precious European cloth for the skirt I designed. I really learned a lot!
And how do you like Fukuoka?
For me, Fukuoka is like a huge department store because you can shop practically anywhere in the city. Furthermore, I really enjoyed my time at the Owl and Cat Cafe. This was a very unique experience.
Do you have any tips or recommendations for people who might want to do an internship?
It is important to create your own Meishi (Japanese business card) if you want to work in Japan. As for a designer, having your own logo is always a good way to get in contact with other designers. It is highly appreciated.
