Company/Type: Team Gifted
Nationality: German

Today Robert from Germany talks about his internship at the school Team Gifted, which specialises on educating children with learning disability.

Why did you choose Asahi Nihongo?
The organisation I went to Japan with, is a partner from Asahi Nihongo.

Why did you pick this internship?
I always wanted to do an internship with regard to education, especially the education of kids. That’s why the internship at Team Gifted school seemed perfect for me. Moreover, I also wanted an internship, where I could talk to people and improve my Japanese skills.

What were your tasks?
Most of the time, I worked as a teaching assistant, which means, I helped the teacher during the lessons. I sometimes gave lessons all by myself. In this case, there was only one student in the class. The subject was not so important, we always discuss a free topic, but is had to be in English. All kids should learn as much English as possible. Besides class, the kids and I were busy with playing games. Frequently, I also taught some kids how to play E-Piano.

Were there any (cultural) problems you had to overcome during your internship?
There were not any problems with my internship, but as it comes to Japanese cuisine, it was a bit hard for me, because there are not so many options for Vegetarians in Fukuoka. But I got used to it and know how to handle it now.

What do you like the most about your internship?
The work with the children was the most cheerful part of my internship. Additionally, I also enjoyed the weekly trips to our bio farm outside Fukuoka City. The school has its own field where it grows different kind of vegetables. The landscape there is great and it is nice to get away from the big city once in a while.

And how do you like Fukuoka?
Fukuoka is a nice place, because the people in Fukuoka are very open-minded and interested in making foreign friends.

Do you have any tips or recommendations for people who might want to do an internship?
You should definitely learn some Japanese to be able to master daily conversations.
