Kagamitenmangu Shrine

kagamitenmangu

We want to present you a small but interesting shrine located amidst skyscrapers in Hakata, Fukuoka City.

The Kagamitenmangu Shrine (Mirror Tenmangu Shrine) is located next to Naka River. There are many small Tenmangu Shrines in Japan and especially in Fukuoka Prefecture. These shrines are dedicated to the god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane. Michizane is said to have passed away in Dazaifu, where the great and famous Tenmangu Shrine was erected.

In the case of Kagamitenmangu, Michizane is said to have seen his reflection in a mirror, at the very point where you can visit the shrine today. That is how the Kagamitenmangu came to its name.
