Let’s talk about another delicious Japanese dish which was influenced by the western cuisine today: Omuraisu (オムライス). Omuraisu is basically an omelette which consists of fried rice.
The word Omuraisu contains “Omu” for omelette and “raisu” for rice, both katakana versions of an English word. It is a popular dish both commonly cooked at home and often found at western style diners in Japan. Omuraisu is also popular in Taiwan and other Asian countries like Korea. Children, in particular, enjoy Omuraisu, because it is often topped with ketchup and therefore it is regularly featured in kids meals at restaurants.
Omuraisu is said to have originated around the turn of the 20th century at a western style restaurant in Tokyo called Renga-tei. It has been featured in popular culture such as the Japanese film Tampopo.

As Omuraisu has gained a huge popularity, it can be found in most family restaurants and due to its rather basic ingredients and because it’s easy to make it is fairly cheap and can even be made at home! Visit some restaurants or look for recipes online, there is tons of delicious Omuraisu just waiting for you!
