Yahoo! Auctions, as it is called outside of Japan, was set up by Yahoo! in 1998 as a no-fee alternative to eBay, which already had a remarkably numerous user base at that time. After a few years of competing against eBay, the service was discontinued in 2007 in the US and Canada due to a decrease in user numbers. The UK site had already been cancelled in 2002, only 4 years after its launch. Even though Yahoo! Auctions was not able to push eBay off the throne of second hand online business, it remains to be a frequently used platform in Asia, currently being available in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

Next to Mercari, “Yafuoku” is one of the biggest online platforms for buying and selling various items in Japan today, with thousands of users using either the website or the smartphone application every day on their Android or iOS.
