If you’re interested in watching movies in Fukuoka without having to stare on a small screen at your home, you are very lucky. In Fukuoka, you can find DVD rental shops and cinemas (映画館) in a lot of places, and your biggest advantage is that most Western movies in Japan are shown in their original language with added Japanese subtitles.
The lip movement, when speaking English, is totally different to when speaking Japanese. That’s the reason why it normally wouldn’t work to dub an English movie with Japanese synchronization. The grammar and sentence structure just doesn’t match with the actors’ mimic, gestures and lip movements.

For authenticity reasons, most Japanese cinemas therefore decide to rather show the English version with subtitles. So if you’re not fluent in Japanese yet or just want to see that new Superman flick, you can go to the movies without the fear of not understanding anything. Animation, Japanese productions and Disney movies are a different pair of shoes though as these get synchronized for the Japanese market and are released in their Japanese version right away. Cinema in Japan works the exact same way as overseas. Tickets are quite expensive though and can cost around ¥1,200.
