Tom P.
Internship Program: Unpaid Internship
Company/Type: Matsuda Architect & Associates
Nationality: German

It is time for a new intern! Tom from Germany did an internship at Matsuda Architect & Associates and talks about his experience.

Why did you choose Asahi Nihongo?
I searched the internet for internships in Japan, that was how I found Asahi Nihongo.

Why did you pick this internship?
I am interested in drawing and had some knowledge when it comes to 3-D programs, so I wanted to do an internship at an architect’s office. For me, Matsuda Architect & Associates was the perfect choice.

What were your tasks?
Based on the ground plans for future buildings, I had to design 3-D models of these buildings in a special program called “Sketch-Up”. Afterwards, I edited the models in Photoshop. During my internship, I designed four buildings and a few rooms. On one occasion, I also went to a viewing of a house the company had designed.

Were there any (cultural) problems you had to overcome during your internship?
No, everything went well during my internship.

What did you like the most about your internship?
I deepened my knowledge regarding the 3-D program “Sketch-Up”, which might be useful for my future. Additionally, my colleagues were all very nice to me and enjoyed my work everyday.

And how do you like Fukuoka?
For me, Fukuoka has just the perfect size – though it is a big city, you do not have the feeling being lost and all places are easily accessible. Furthermore, the people are very friendly and open-minded towards foreigners.

Do you have any tips or recommendations for people who might want to do an internship?
If you want to stay longer in Japan, you should definitely learn some basic Japanese before doing an internship. Concerning my internship company, it is very useful if you have some previous knowledge of programs like “Sketch-Up” and “Photoshop”. I would also recommend everyone to go out and talk to Japanese as much as possible, because you will not have such a great chance to practice your Japanese again once you go back to your country.
