This week, the Japanese study group learned about Japanese sports. After discussing which sport is most popular in Japan, which clearly is baseball, the group focused on sports that are Japanese inventions with deep roots in the country’s history.
After counting up several martial arts, the teacher led the students to the topic he wanted to talk about, as he prepared a grammar lesson playing with terms coming from that sport: Sumo.
After a short introduction to the sumo ranking system, the order in which the strength of the fighters is measured, the teacher explained how to express that something is bigger, smaller, stronger etc than something else in Japanese.
The students were given a small quiz to determine the final ranking of the sumo fighters and playfully learned a new Japanese expression!
