Atago Shrine

You want to experience Japanese culture and an astonishing view over Fukuoka at the same time?
Then you should definitely visit the Atago Shrine in Fukuoka.

The shrine was founded in 72 and it is therefore the oldest shrine in Fukuoka prefecture. It is also one of the Three Major Atago Shrines in Japan (beside the one in Tokyo and Osaka).

Though the climb of Mount Atago might be slightly exhausting, the scenery of Fukuoka City is definitely worth it. You might just sit on a bench, relax and enjoy the nice view over Hakata, Momochi Seaside and the bay in front of Nonokonoshima and other islands.

By the way, there was a cable car leading to the shrine, but it was closed down in 1943 due to World War II.

So why not visit Atago Shrine the next time you are planning a short trip in Fukuoka?
